SEINE RIVER RESORT  -   Lac Des Mille Lacs  -  Northwestern Ontario  -   Canada

                                  2012

Susan and I have now retired from running the resort. Eventually, we will put the resort up for sale, but for now we want to spend some time at SRR in the summer, go fishing, and relax.  I will continue to practice medicine at a slower pace, but we are committed to exploring Canada over the next few years. We lost two of our labs in the last year, are now down to two, but have five that are “resting” at SRR. All the best to our friends/guests, and if you are in the vicinity, drop in & say hi.   J

LOCATION

Approximately 100 miles west of Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada on Highway # 17, 6 miles past Upsala, turn left on Blind Bay Road and drive straight for 7 miles (13 km) on gravel road.  Do not turn until the very end.  All the resort cabins and campground look out on a beautiful bay of the Seine River on Lac Des Mille Lacs.

ACCOMODATION

8 very comfortable cabins, most have two private bedrooms (2 twin beds per bedroom). Every cabin has a private 3-piece bathroom and large kitchen-living-dining room.  All bed linen, cookware and utensils are provided.  Every kitchen has a double stainless steel sink, propane stove, electric fridge, and ample cupboards. All cabins have full continuous electrical supply provided by our generators 24/7 with hot and cold running water from our 300 foot deep well drilled through Canadian Shield granite.  This water is superb, crystal clear, pure and superior to any city or bottled water, and exits the wellhead at 40 deg.F.  Do NOT Bring Bottled Water – It’s Inferior. A large propane barbecue and outdoor burners are available, free, 24/7.  Stunning sites for Campers or RVs are available by reservation (no tents or tent trailers).

RESORT MOTO -"Leave Us As You Found Us - CLEAN - the lake, the bush, the cabins"

The resort is kept extremely clean and we expect our guests to maintain this standard.  We attempt to be environmentally friendly at every turn and you will not find a cigarette butt, wrapper, etc. on our grounds - we all have to be responsible for our environment.  The mood of the resort is extremely peaceful and quiet.  An ideal place to relax in comfort and enjoy the outdoors.  Our location is weatherproof - you can always get out on the water to fish, regardless of conditions (except for lightning).

DOCKING

A good launching ramp and lots of docking space is available.  A large spotless fish cleaning house, outlets for battery chargers, oil, regular unleaded gasoline, and live bait (minnows are available May & June) are available at the main dock. You must bring your own leeches and crawlers. Leeches cannot be brought across the border and can be bought at Kakabeka Falls. Crawlers can cross the border but cannot have even a trace of soil on them (must be completely washed free of any soil prior to transport).

ACTIVITIES

Primarily relaxation and fishing.  Excellent walleye and northern pike waters (4 of each per person per day-total possession, with slot limits).  Lake and river fishing are available within three minutes from the main dock.  Wildlife is abundant and you routinely see moose, bald eagles, common loons, osprey, and black bears to attest to the health of our ecosystem.  Showers and a private bathroom are available for campers.  Bringing pets must be prearranged (all shots up to date and active heartworm treatment mandatory) and is discouraged.

BOATS

Basic 14 foot aluminum for rent with 9.9 HP motors by reservation ONLY. Bring a cushion for total comfort.  Most of our guests bring their own "real fishin boats" and we encourage this.

COMMUNICATION

807-986-2381  radio-phone at the main lodge which connects into the Bell system (this is a manual receive-transmit system that will not accept electronic devices such as an answering machine,etc.).  Outgoing calls are collect or credit/calling cards from May through Aug. The best time to phone us is 8 a.m. or p.m. and let it ring at least 12 times (we are usually a long way from the phone and if there is no answer, phone back in 5 minutes).  Email is the preferred means of communication during the fall and winter, but from early May to end of August the resort phone is the only means of contact. There is no email-internet capability at the resort. We have cellular service available in the Lac Des Mille Lacs area, connectivity will depend upon the power of each individual cell phone, and many cell phones will operate while out on the water but not at the Resort itself. NOTE: This is the 24th year of operation for Susan and Bruce (by far the longest on LDML) and we are only open for a few specific weeks during the summer (we are semi-retired :). This makes it even more difficult to contact us through the summer during weeks we are not operating.

MAIN LODGE

Open daily from 08:00 to 18:00 hrs. E.D.S.T.  We stock a few grocery staples and basic fishing tackle.  8 day regular Fishing Licenses have always been available at the resort, but there is a possibility that the MNR is only going to issue licences electronically in 2011, meaning you should get your licence in Kakabeka Falls prior to arriving.

BORDER CONCERNS

-You cannot bring any foreign soil into Canada. This means crawlers have to be washed well with water prior to crossing the border. If the crawlers are checked and there is even a hint of soil (or anything that looks like soil) on the crawlers you will be asked to return to the US and dump them. This also applies to potatoes. If you are checked and have potatoes you could be asked to return to the US and dump them.

-Leeches and minnows cannot be brought into Canada.

-If you are a US citizen and you are spot checked by Customs officers you will not be allowed into Canada if you have a criminal record, have a history of a DUI(driving while under the influence of alcohol) conviction, have a firearm on your person, etc. If you have concerns about this aspect, contact Canadian Customs with your specific details (1-800-461-9999 or www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca  ). If you contact Canadian Customs in advance special entrance permission can be granted for many individuals (for example: if you have a DUI that occurred once or that occurred years ago). All US citizens must have a passport to get back into the US.
